Colour, Light, Space and Time

As I get older I notice that my focus has been changing gradually and constantly over the years.

In my youth, discovering the spectrum of colour was very exciting and dominated my first artistic attempts. Later, learning about transparent materials meant that ‘light’ became the central focus in all the years I spent working with ceramics and glass.

Now I notice my focus is gradually shifting again. Time and by implication, Space – have become the main subject for my reading, thinking and working. I find it interesting that the artistic focus shifts and mirrors a life’s journey.

To some degree, it is a natural process. The child loving bright primary colours, the adult appreciating the subtler aspects of light and shade, while with advancing years ‘time’ becomes more precious and therefore a more important focus.

Time and Space: I find lots of inspiration from many sources, ranging from Antony Gormley’s recent exhibition: ‘SUBJECT’ at Kettlel’s Yard, Cambridge, to re-reading Thomas Mann’s:  ‘The Magic Mountain’ (this time an English translation . . .)
